GLOSSARY OF TERMS FOR RIGID HEDDLE LOOM

  • Reed/Heddle = The comb-like device that holds and separates the warp threads. It has slots and eyes/holes which allow every second warp thread to move up and down and create the shed. It is also used to beat the weft into place.
  • Warp = the threads going lengthwise
  • Weft = the threads woven across the warp threads
  • Shed = the space between the warp threads when reed is up or down
  • Pick = one row of weft yarn
  • DPI = dents per inch, or more commonly how many spaces (the eyes/holes and the slots) in the reed are there per inch for threads
  • EPI = ends per inch
  • Sett = how many threads per inch (or cm). The sett is calculated by the WPI. The sett determines which reed you should use
  • WPI = wraps per inch – used to calculate the sett
  • End = a warp end is one warp thread of the prepared warp
  • Balanced Weave = the number of warp threads per inch (cm) equals the number of rows of weft per inch (cm)
  • Beating = term used for pushing the threads into place. We use the reed to beat each row into the weaving – do not beat too hard!
  • Pattern Stick/Pickup Stick = tool to create a pattern by altering the way the warp and weft interlace
  • Shuttle = yarn is wound onto the shuttle. The shuttle carries the yarn through the weaving
  • Draw-in = the narrowing of the weaving at the selvedges due to the natural shrinking of the web. Excessive draw-in is caused from the weft being too tight
  • Selvedge = the woven edge of a fabric
  • Take-up = the amount that the warp shortens in length due to the undulation caused by the weaving
