Assignment 1 – Cornelia Chow & David Perry

This project allowed a lot of exploration for us. We started off by cutting pieces of random shapes and sizes and trying to piece them together. This was harder than we imagined! We ended up each trying to realize one of our ambitious ideas (David’s accordion and Cornelia’s double-inflatable) and those became our favorite pieces. We learned that corners were really hard to seal, seams needed to be reinforced on the inside and the outside, and that simple geometry was the easiest to work with. We also found that the inflatable would steam up when we blew into it and the clear plastic becomes less see-through, something we didn’t account for and wasn’t in our vision for the clear pieces we created.

In all of these pieces, we only used the plastic that was supplied to us, so if we did this project again we’d want to experiment with different materials. We’d also want to get more ambitious with shapes and explore negative space like the green square donut piece.
