The one interaction that struck me today was the ‘fire game’ that the children were playing in groups of four. What was really striking about this game was the way it totally engrossed the children playing it, and the children watching the other’s play. I guess there is something about a challenge, a narrative, and a journey that gets us excited and engrossed, almost to a degree of separating us from reality altogether – there is great power in storytelling as a tool. The children essentially took on the role of firefighters in this game, working together to douse off an imaginary house fire. This interaction, in which the children had to work together to solve a problem – led to an interesting development, which encouraged teamwork and collaboration – something that’s quite an antithesis to most games, where you usually compete. The idea of using storytelling and performance as a learning tool is something I definitely wish to explore in the future
