Design Example: GT2 Timing Pulleys¶
Timing belts are an efficient way to transmit motion and energy. A more general discussion of designing with timing belts can be found on the Timing Belt Guide pages.
Following are sample designs for custom GT2 pulleys for either laser-cutting or 3D printing, intended as a start for producing custom pulleys for your design. Sometimes, the belt grooves can be directly integrated into other part designs rather than attaching a separate pulley component.
The SolidWorks model files and a few sample individual DXF laser-cutting files or STL 3D-printing files may be found in the SolidWorks/GT2-timing-pulleys folder.
Customizable GT2 Pulley (Laser-Cut)¶
The GT2-timing-pulley-laser-cut.SLDPRT file is a pulley model designed to be easily customized. It features a design table which generates a large set of standard pulley sizes and which can be easily expanded for any tooth count.
The sample shown above is a 72 tooth pulley intended to be cut from 6mm flat stock, either plywood or acrylic. It includes a hole pattern for a flange coupler with 4 mm bore, but it is expected you will customize this to your own design.
Customizable GT2 Pulley (3D-Print)¶
The GT2-timing-pulley-3D-print.SLDPRT file is a pulley model designed to be easily customized. It features a design table which generates a large set of standard pulley sizes and which can be easily expanded for any tooth count.
The sample shown above is a 72 tooth pulley intended to be 3D printed without support. It includes a hole pattern for a flange coupler with 4 mm bore, but it is expected you will customize this to your own design. It includes double flanges and one side has an inset pocket to reduce the central thickness.
Below is a drawing of the 48-tooth version of the part.
