When I first sketched my design, I hadn’t put much thought behind the kind of performance I wanted to achieve. I wanted to evoke a positive emotion in the audience, and decided to try to make my robot dance to inspire feelings of joy. However, while building my robot and playing with the physics, I struggled to get the robot hold a solid pose and it would either look like it was struggling or wiggling. This inspired me to pivot, and instead tell a story of struggle and success to try to evoke feelings of pride and joy. So I made the robot try to flip a chair, at first barely budging it before finally flipping it and another chair behind it. After flipping the chairs, it celebrates with a wiggly dance.
