For this assignment, I started to think about changes in form through gathering the material and shirring it into uniform folds. With this manipulation, you can transform the form of the cloth over time through movement. The original idea I had for this assignment was for the cloth to start out as a solid gathered piece. With the capstan motors and different pulls of the strings, the cloth will unfold out and move along the direction the motors pull it towards. But again, with the capstan, I think it was a little harder trying translate my thoughts into reality. I filmed five videos of very different but minuscule movements with changes of position with the cloth because I wasn’t able to create what I imagined. In my head, the cloth would have two main motors that are connected to each opposite edge. The motors connecting the edges that are parallel to the folds would unravel the cloth. And the edges perpendicular would gather the cloth back in its folded form.
