For this assignment I wanted to leverage the concept of channels to create a serpent effect in my fabric. I wanted to use a channel with a series of notches, and thread through each section a solid rod, creating a spine like structure. I then wanted to leverage the capstans to make this structure twist in a wave motion, causing an overall serpent like effect. I very quickly found that with the current design there was little room for motion and heavy resistance from the fabric. To alleviate this, I decided to cut deeper into the fabric at each notch, thus allowing for less resistance and more potential for motion. While this freed the fabric, it also very much changed the kind of motion that the fabric underwent, as each piece was far more independent, ending with a kind of moving step like appearance. I switched to secure each line to a side of the notch rather than in the center and quite liked the final tilted appearance. Overall I was happy with this as I got an effect that was only achievable with the insertion of rods, but I would have overall prefer ed to achieve more complex motion.
