Originally, I intended to create a half-circle shape similar to a fan, and wanted to create an open-close movement when the weight was drawn up and down the bottom.
There turned out to be several problems with my approach. The main one being that the top of the fabric wasn’t weighed down enough; because there wasn’t an area of the fabric that could remain stable, it was haphazardly jerked around when I used the capstan. In hindsight, I also should have added more boning to the fabric itself.
