Day 10: (Mon Feb 21, Week 6) Workshop: Silicone Bonding

New Assignments

New assignment, due Wednesday: next iteration of design for mold test. The 3D print is due Friday at 9AM, please plan accordingly. We will be testing the Ecoflex 00-45 Near Clear.

I apologize for the imprecision of these assignments, I will be formalizing this soon as Part B: Open Mold Refinement.

Administrative

  1. We have 24 lbs of silicone arriving this week, along with a sampler of pigments. Please see S22 materials guide.

  2. The standard allocation is 1350 grams (3 lbs) per student for prototypes and projects, so please plan appropriately.

  3. We will work from a common supply and log usage rather than mark individual bottles.

Agenda

  1. The first half of class will be a practical hands-on workshop in demolding and bonding. We will temporarily move to HL A5.

    1. Discussion of the plans for the lab.

    2. Distribution of filled molds and silicone tubing stubs.

    3. Demolding the cast parts.

    4. Demonstration of the setup, measurement, and mixing of a silicone batch. We will be following the draft process notes found on Small Batch Mixing Protocol (Non-Vacuum).

    5. Demonstration of pouring and bonding.

    6. Individual practice bonding your halves.

    7. Lab cleanup and storage.

  2. Mid-class break and return to HL A4.

  3. Review and discussion of individual project plans (all-class).
