Structural Weaving — David Perry
Goal:The prompt for this project was simple: create a weaving. I made it my goal to create a woven form which both highlights the unique structure of the warp and also explores techniques for integrating rigid structures onto the surface.
Inspiration: I took inspiration from artists and craftspeople who integrated basic 3d forms into weavings. Observing these experiments you can see that the warp becomes divided running under and over the inserted piece — highlighting the unique structure of a weave.
Additionally I looked to sailing and nautical structures to further inform my exploration — thinking about how knots, cordage, and some tension can create a unique and robust form.
Reflection: As with many projects I work, the goal of this piece was to experiment with the unique properties of the material. What I built out a set of experiments on the woven what I quickly came to realize was the unique and intense time commitment which each sample required — making it very difficult to produce any large number of samples. I’m intrigued in the future to play with methods of cutting down the time commitment to each section of the weaving so that more can be sampled in a finite amount of time.
