Reflection
I created this dress with the intent to symbolize my younger self, who wore dresses often and would always be in peace and innocence without any stress from the ‘real-world’. A time when there were no worries, no crises, no COVID-19. I have always wanted to make a piece of clothing, specifically a dress, a pretty yet simple dress.
Yellow is a color which represents life and energy to me representing one’s youth. While working on the dress, I added prettier ribbons to accessorize the dress. One ribbon has Chanel labelled all over, and the other a bakery called Gaby et Jules, and to me these show how sometimes a brand is so powerful sticking a brand name to garment increases the value of the clothing a lot (in my case, just for fun). The red ribbon makes the overall dress more child-like.
I learned a lot making this dress, using a sewing machine, hand-sewing, figuring out straps and also straps. I hand-sewn the ribbons on, including the center popping-out pearl piece. The ruffles were a bit difficult as a line of yarn is supposed to be removed and the ruffles on the linen cloth is supposed to stay. But in my case, I had the ruffles added plucking a thread of yarn one by one to keep the ruffles and then machine-sewing them on. The back of the dress has shown stitches and also a more adjustable strap which I am also really proud of.
Overall, I learned a lot from creating my first piece of clothing. And I am impressed how pretty it looks, next time I will make it so it is comfortable and easy to wear and take-off (such as adding stretchier material), and iron it before displaying. Thank you!
]]>I have finished cutting the different parts necessary for the dresses and made a mock-up and sewed the top of the actual yellow dress. I fitted the top part of the dress to myself, not sure how the bottom will be if it is not as stretchy. Pictures shown above.
]]>The core concept of my final project is creating a dress. I have always wanted to make a piece of clothing, especially a dress. I want to make it unique in the sense that it is a dress that caters to what I want and not the average person. Something that is a bit ruffly on the bottom, and has nice ribbons on certain parts of the dress, and all comes together. Especially important is that the dress is fitted to myself and I am able to wear the dress, so learning how to tailor-make a dress for a certain customer almost.
The choice of materials I use include cotton/linen for the dress so that is it is breathable. I am thinking of using white as ruffle white dresses are really pretty, but yellow could work too. And the usual sewing thread and needle to sew the dress together. For the ribbons, I will use red ribbons as well as laced and a logo ribbon to add more liveliness to the dress.
Timeline:
11 23-26 – Draw sketches, create mock-ups, keep brainstorming designs and
12/1 – Finish sewing of entire dress
12/4 – Fix all parts of dress which requires fixing
12/8 – Finish all final-touches and sewn ribbons

Process
For this project, after sampling many different types of weaves using different colors and I was thinking of creating a weave that symbolized more of nature, more of what is a part of me. I usually create projects that represent who I am, that everything is related to nature, and that the weave is made from my hand work and symbolizes nature. I wanted to start with the ocean, and then diamond blocks that all connected with each other. I had a picture in my head of these individual weaved blocks and connecting them altogether like a spider web (as you would see in nature), and alongside that the green scenery of grass, trees, and real life objects. What ended up occurring is I had first created a solid ocean, then a jungle and then the trees. With certain unique elements throughout the piece such as an opening circle. I really like to have the solidified yarn weaves connect with each other, however it seemed to have been a bit more soft and thus I tried to strengthen parts of the weavings with strong tangled yarn pieces.
What worked well
The opening circle hill turned out very beautiful, with the two different opposing colors really seemed . Also, I think the tangled green pieces popping up really brought weight and liveliness to the entire piece overall, as though it was an actual jungle, similarly with the waves of yarn popping out (the red-orange-ish colors). I think my creation of the tree and mushrooms also look very much real and stays true to what I am trying to show in nature.
What I would improve or change
What I would improve is to have weaved more solidified backgrounds for the pieces such as the tree and mushroom. I would also have changed instead of having more waves 3D popping out, but to play more with solid weaves and then attach 3D objects out from it (such as cotton for clouds, and leaves). I would want to have better control on the
What I learned through this project and for future projects
I learned that the image I had in my head might not always come out to life, but that I can always continue with my creativity and piece it together in the end. I should not be afraid of trying many different techniques and to continuously be a growing learner and research techniques. For future projects, I will definitely try to sample as many techniques as I could in the beginning and also create pieces as I am working on it instead of having a whole image in the back of my head.
Five Directions
This weaving is called the Aglauros’s Vision of the Bridal Chamber of Herse, from the Story of Mercury and Herse. It was made by Giovanni Battista Lodi da Cremona. The weavings shows a story which depicts the seventh, and the second to last episode in the story of an ill-fated love affair between Herse and Mercury. The weaving is about the union between Mercury and how her sister might appear here. The vision of this is shown in an exquisitely sumptuous re-edition of the tapestry series, heavy with precious thread and woven with a virtuoso display of different surface effects. It was made in 1570 ca. And the weaving is used as a tapestry set.
