Improvisation Inflatables – Elena

Reflection:

Overall, I feel confident in my ability to cut and create forms out of a 2D plane. However I believe that I struggled with the seams for the inflatables as well as the organization of the final composition of the inflatables. I had a lot of fun thinking of different color combinations as well as objects that I could make out of inflatables. I am excited to see what kind of interesting inflatables I will be able to make in the future through this class.

a short clip of me blowing up this inflatable!

Inflatable One:

For this inflatable I started off  with a creating various triangular shapes and puxzzling the pieces together. In the end I created almost a beach ball form that reminded me–because of the color palette of a Mondrian painting.

Inflatable Two:

With this inflatable I began to experiment by adding different curves in the shapes and seeing the convex/concave forms pop out. It was interesting seeing the way that the plastic bends over and extrudes out just by the shapes I was cutting from the plastic

Inflatable Three:

Probably my favorite one in terms of the process, With this inflatable I attempted to cut out shapes that looked curvalinear and ended up with a pickle looking shape. At the end I had to cut out a piece that completed the form/puzzle but in the end, I was pretty happy with what I had created.

Inflatable Four:

From the pickle, I decided to move on to other food items, I attempted to make a triangular form by cutting off the end of the bags and using flat planes to create that triangular prism effect. Overall, I am not that happy with this inflatable because of the composition of the watermelon and the shape that it takes on.

Inflatable Five:

For my final inflatable, I attempted to make the scale a bit larger and play with the clear plastic. I wanted to explore how a pointed shape could be attached to a spherical shape and in the end, the resulting form was almost like a rocket.
