Push/Pull Objects Part 1 – Sue Lee

Process, Discoveries, Successes, and Challenges

I was quite intrigued by the cylinder through the cube that Olivia showed in class and I really wanted to include the hole through a primary shape idea in one of my push/pull objects. Also, after finishing my first stuffed object with the hanging cube, I wanted to extend the hanging idea and french fries were the first thing which came to mind. This project required pattern making on paper for the french fries and hand sewing many stuffed objects closed.

Some challenges I encountered were in pattern making: I drew the pattern with a wide Expo marker, which altered some of the measurements, leading to a couple redrawings of the pattern. I also found that the inner tubing fabric could be a little shorter and tighter. I cut my lining to be as tall as the cube and this made the inner lighting slightly baggy.

I also discovered that felt was a nice fabric which didn’t need hemming in many cases after cutting with scissors.

Following the critique, I regret not venturing a little further out of my comfort zone and experimenting with other materials (buttons, zippers, etc.) and also incorporating more darting, baffling, or complex shapes in my objects.
