Push/Pull Part 1 – David Kleiman
My first sown form for this project was this X that I had made. When I saw the furry fabric it immediately reminded me of a blanket that I have and I was attracted to it. For that reason, I decided to take the fabric and create a unique shape with it that I think counters the emotions that the fabric creates. I decided to make an X since I think this has a more aggressive emotion attached to the form than the fabric itself. I am happy with the result.
For this form, I started out with a sphere form shape and flattened it and added a curved edge. It came out slightly looking like a human heart which was a happy coincidence. To go along with this shape I added two flaps almost to represent the tubes pumping blood inside and out of the heart. This was probably the most obscure and favorite piece that I created for this project.
For this last form, I wanted to create something representing a bodily form. I chose a burlap sack like fabric and when I came across it I thought it would be great to create a bodily form. I started out with a cylindrical shape and morphed it to look like a body, came out looking like a perched meerkat! Since there was no more filling I filled it with thrown away plastic bags to keep along with the recycling and sustainability aspect of the piece. I had a great time making this one.
