Push/Pull Part 1 – Rebecca Enright
For my first object I used a baseball sphere pattern and wanted to see how angular I could make it with darting and play around with changing the shape a lot. I used this one mainly as a way to figure out where to start and get a basic grasp of manipulating it via sewing.
For the second form I did a cube pattern and wanted to see how pulling it with embroidery thread would affect it. Due to the type of stretchy fabric that this was also, it made the shape much more round than I had originally intended -especially when stuffed all the way. The embroidery also worked as a sort of button at points such as the bottom two parts, rather than an overall pull inwards that I thought it would make happen. That also helped make it a lot more round.
For my final form I did a cylinder with a cone on either side. I also added an eye in the middle because the blue fur made me think of it as a monster. The fur was also really challenging because it tended to shed a lot and it was hard to tell if it was attaching to the muslin in the right way, but overall it worked out.
I also stuffed them with poly-fil, but I kept some of the garbage/shopping bags that I had in them to maintain the kind of memory foam feel that they had. Now they’re still a bit squishy but stiffer so that the shape is more fully exposed.
