Inflatables & Soft Sculpture

Assignment 1 – Rachel Lee

This was my first time working with plastic and tape as mediums, and I quickly learned when developing my five pieces that both are rather difficult to work with when together. I initially decided to make some organic experiments based on random cuts and selections of colors, wanting to see what kind of shapes would result. As I became more familiar with the materials and finally nailed down how to inflate the inflatables, I shifted towards creating recognizable forms. Although the original assignment was to create quirky shapes, I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could pull off recreating the everyday through mere plastic and tape. I think I was successful in capturing the essence of a juice pouch and a bag, and am intrigued by how the latter could delve into the realm of inflatable fashion and necessity. Had we more time for this assignment, I would have liked to explore playing with size and inflating beyond straws and our breaths.
