Jamie Espinosa-Briones:Push-Pull

For the first push-pull object I improvised darts of various different sizes to see what shapes I can make out of them. I arranged the modules into different arrangements until I found one that looks like a familiar object, in this case it was a purse.
For this object, I wanted to create lips since the material felt very kitschy to me. I wanted to lean into a cartoonish and oversized element that would have an element of charm to it. For this object, I created a pattern using paper and darting to learn how to effectively apply darting in multiple different ways. It helped me get really acclimated to the technique.
Finally, for the final object, I first created a bunch of tubes made of a specific felt fabric that I found pretty. I wanted to use these to create ties that could manipulate the form. In this case the form was a long tube which I stuffed slightly with polyfill and began tying and sewing knots shut.

Music Tower – Jamie Espinosa

This tower is inspired by the song “Luna Llena” by Arca. This song represents a lot to me given its connection to trans-lyricism whilst coming from a Latin artist, which resonates a lot of my own personal life. This song is about empowerment, coming to terms with owns gender, expansion, acceptance, and love.

Improvisation Inflatables – Jamie Espinosa

Inflatable 1

For the first inflatable, I decided to improvise by cutting up the bags in random unorganized ways, thinking that I would be able to get unique geometrical properties through this methodology. While I was correct, the inflatable had many issues since it did not easily inflate due to the holes and weak connections between the strips.

For the second iteration, the fix I made was to be a lot more mindful of the geometry I was using and pay attention to how they would connect. I cut out more rectangular strips to be able to attach the pieces so that there wouldn’t be many holes. I used the tape to connect the pieces together and allowed the form to arise naturally with the alternating color schemes of black and white.

The final iteration of the improvisational inflatables was the one that was the most well-built. I restrained myself to create strips that would allow me to create strong seams with the tape. I accommodated for seam allowance and this resulted in a final piece with no holes and inflated the best out of them all. I also played around with attached scrap strips onto the “head” of the column in an effort to create more dynamic characteristics of the simple cylinder.
