Course Kit Visual Guide¶
The following images may help you identify unfamiliar parts in the course kit. This is not a complete guide to the kit, as many parts are either well-labeled or likely clear from context. Please refer to the Kit Inventory for a more complete listing.
Mechanical Parts¶
I was not aware the small parts would come jumbled together. I suggest finding a better way to keep them organized. I have sorted my small mechanical parts into a tackle box (not included). Images and details of specific parts continue below.
Rotational Motion¶
Shoulder screws, 1/4 inch shoulder diameter. The longer ones are 1.5 inch long, the shorter ones 1.0 inch. The thread is 10-24. These are intended as rotational shafts to use either either the bushing bearings or ball bearings. They will rust if wet. The head has a 1/8 inch hex socket.
Hex nuts, #10-24 to match the shoulder screw threads. The nominal width is 3/8 inch.
Ball bearings, 1/4 inch inside diameter, 5/8 inch outside diamter, shielded. These are intended to be used with shoulder screw shafts for precision low-friction joints.
Bushing bearing for 1/4 inch shaft, SAE 863 bronze, 5/16 inch OD, 1/4 inch length.
Two sizes of washers. The larger ones fit around a 1/4 shoulder screw. The smaller ones are for #10 screws and will clear the shoulder screw threads but not the shoulder.
Unthreaded spacers, off-white nylon, 1/2 inch OD, 1/4 inch long, for 1/4 inch screw sizes. Intended for shortening shoulder screw gaps or as ad-hoc plastic bushings.
Fasteners¶
M3x10 button head screws. These were intended to match the original gearmotor selection.
M3x16 plastic cheese head screws. They are intended for mounting the Arduino.
Self-tapping blunt sheet metal screws, #4 x 1/2 inch, Phillips head. These are intended for self-tapping into laser-cut plywood.
Unthreaded spacers, nylon, for M3 screws, 3.3 mm ID x 4mm length.
Wooden dowels, for 1/4 inch holes, 1.5 inch length, fluted. Intended for press-fit connections into laser-cut plywood.
Miscellaneous¶
Assorted springs. They may be useful as countersprings to provide return motion, as energy storage, or as shock mountings.
Steel balls, 3/8 inch diameter. Intended to be used as freely rolling marbles or as three-axis pivots.
Glass marbles, 5/8 inch.
O-rings, oil-resistant Buna-N, 1/8 inch fractional width, Dash Number 223. Intended for use as tires, round belts, or elastic marble bumpers.
Electronic Parts¶
The majority of the electronics are packaged in the Elegoo Super Starter Kit. Following are a few additional parts provided separately.
Barrel jack to screw terminal adapter, female 5.5mm larger diameter x 2.1mm center pin diameter. Intended for connecting the 5V power supply to wire leads.
Solderless breadboards, small, 170 points, 4.5 x 3.5 inches, peelable adhesive backing.
Optical proximity sensor, reflective, infrared, NPN phototransistor, LTH 1550-01. Intended for contactless sensing of mechanical movements.
Laser diode, 5 milliwatt, 5 Volt, 650 nm (red). Draws a visible dot. Intended for long-distance through-beam sensing or laser show displays.
Fabricated Laser-Cut Plywood Parts¶
Original designs for the fabricated parts are available in Fusion 360 in the ‘kit - laser-cut components’ folder of the ‘CKS Courses Resources’ project.
The DXF files for laser-cutting can be found in two places: folder of individual DXF files, dxf.zip containing all DXF files.
