Day 5: (Tue Sep 14, Week 3) Reactive Performance¶
Notes for 2021-09-14.
New Assignments¶
New pair assignment, due in a week: Exercise: Sensors Duo.
Agenda¶
Review assignment videos.
Introduce next assignment.
Kinetic sculpture videos.
Informal introduction to control theory concepts. (I instead suggested watching the video lectures.)
Breakout session. We’re going to explore the construction of a reactive behavior by writing ‘programs’ for a human to follow.
Choose one or more props from the room which you will place in front of your seated partner.
Write out on paper a set of no more than three rules defining how the person should move one of their arms, trying to keep the language as concrete and kinematic as possible. Try to avoid highly interpretive actions or relying on human judgement.
At least one should address the neutral case, e.g. “trace an expanding spiral with your fingertips starting from a comfortable point”.
At least one should address a sensed collision, e.g. “upon any contact, stop and then begin a new spiral centered on the contact location.”
Take turns playing the part of ‘robot’. Try to apply the rules as literally as possible.
Stay safe, don’t hurt yourself or others.
