Pinch and Pull

This first experiment uses a four-bar linkage to control an actuator using a pinching motion. I was interested in seeing how I could extend the motion through two mechanisms using one continuous piece of string and settled on connecting my fingers as part of it.

Claw

Similar to the first prototype I am using one string to control two movements. In this case they are two actuators facing in opposite directions and of different sizes so they did not curl easily at first. With some manipulation of the mechanisms placement I was able to get the string to control both curling movements smoothly.

Hello

This third prototype started out as a pair of glasses that were supposed to lift upwards revealing my eyes by using an actuator on my forehead. It didn’t work out as planned because the angles didn’t allow for a nice curl and the actuator eventually broke. The final mechanism is a variation of another folding technique and string to redirect the motion laterally.
