For this assignment I sewed plastic tubing into a piece of fabric and threaded a string through the tubing in hopes that I could create a mechanism that would tug on the string and change the shape of the tubing. I found that if I wanted to control the shape of the tubing with one string then I would have to constrain the tube in its other degrees of freedom and it became too complicated. Using dowels and a simple pulley system I decided to use a rotating motion to make the tubing and fabric mechanism into a protective headpiece that covers my face when I extend my hand.
