The parasite we designed is inspired by the twisted wound that grows up Ashitaka’s arm in Princess Mononoke. It becomes quickly detrimental to the host restricting arm movement and sucking nutrients as it curls and grows around both arms. We used pneumatic valves to activate its movement from the shoulder area. We started this project by building off of one of Olivia’s experiments from class which used small chambers heat sealed at an angle to promote curling. In order to get the effect we wanted, we took her concept, increased the length and size, and added thread to one end as an anchor to the arm.
Compared to the previous exercises, it was a lot easier to iterate and make changes quickly. Because of this, we were able to easily alternate on who was doing what, and to share the tasks evenly.
