January 30, 2019 / Gallery Improvisation Inflatables – David Kleiman The first inflatable I created I knew that I wanted to use black and red together in the same piece. I really enjoy how the colors come together to almost exhibit a sense of danger or urgency while at the same time not seeming too off-putting. I started with a cube and created the two red spikes on either side afterwards. The finishing piece reminded me of something from a video game or fantasy world. When I was creating this second piece I only had a small amount of black and red plastic bags left but i wanted to continue with the color scheme. I began cutting strips of red and black and then figured out how to put them together. I finished off the piece by adding clear tape and plastic on both edges so that the inside of the inflatable could be viewed. For my third inflatable I wanted to create something realistic and see how closely my inflatable version of the object could match. I like how pineapples have a lot of bright energy associated with them and saw the yellow plastic and was inspired. I noticed that halfway through the process creating real objects is not as easy as it seems but I am still content with the final product. For my fourth inflatable I saw blue plastic and decided to cut a wave into it. Once I saw the one side of the wave come together I thought it would be a good idea to cut the same shape into another color and connect the two pieces. It came together and looked nicer than I thought it would! For my last inflatable I started thinking about how people could interact with inflatables so that they have a function beyond just looking at them. My first immediate thought was thinking about how people at basketball games hit two inflatables together to make noise from the crowd. I decided to design two of these for that purpose but it turned out the that plastic did not have the same noise making properties. Then my childish side got the best of me and thought these two would be good for a friendly sword fight. Either way it is interesting to explore the world of interacting with inflatables physically.
