Inflatables & Soft Sculpture

Assignment 1 – Dayoung Chung

Throughout the process, I really enjoyed making different shapes with various materials. For most of my inflatables, I started with an idea of what I wanted the pieces to be shaped. For some of them, I didn’t know how they would turn out. It was very difficult to predict the outcome and measure the size of the pieces and combine them together with no gaps.

Inflatable 1

In my first inflatable, I was inspired by the big inflatable that we made in the second day of class. Our team made huge triangular pyramid shaped inflatable and I wanted to make a smaller version with round base, but it ended up look like a rocket. Also, I used the transparent, blue, orange, and white colored plastic bags. I wanted this inflatable to have variety compare to the other inflatables. Therefore, I used the diverse colors and cut out shapes such as round, triangle, and rectangle.

Inflatable 2

For my second inflatable, I wanted to make something adorable and fluffy so I decided to make a snowman shaped inflatable. This was the only one that I actually used marker and other object to measure and sketch before cutting it. I drew two circles in order to make the snowman shape then tape the two white plastic bags together to save time. After cutting and taping them, I cut out black eyes and orange nose for the snowman. I would add another layer of plastic and attach it to the edge since it didn’t get fluffy as I wanted it to be.

Inflatable 3

The third inflatable was made of green cellophane, gold table cloth, and orange plastic bag. This inflatable has the most various materials. I started with an idea of making a star shape but I decided to make it a Shuriken (thing that Ninjas throw) since it’s more unique. I like this one because of the sound it makes while blowing it and also its diversity.

Inflatable 4

For this inflatable, I started out with the plan to make a perfect cube with some transparency. I used the cellophane and white plastic bag in order to have white as background. This one was my favorite because of it’s volume and color.

Inflatable 5

For my last one, I wanted to create something long and narrow. I used the vibrant blue, red, white to have Korean flag color scheme. This inflatable reminded me of a party horn that we blow in birthday parties. It was hard to document because of its length, it would have been better if I let someone else to take a picture while blowing it.

Overall, I really liked the experimental aspect of this project and learned a lot about the significance of material’s quality. The plastic’s thickness and texture really matters in this kind of project. They make different shape and sound after inflating them. If I had another assignment like this, I would try making something interactive. In the critique, I was very interested in the ones that are interactive with each other.
