Inflatables & Soft Sculpture

Push/Pull 1 – Jamie Park

Primitive Shape 1

Primitive Shape 2

Primitive Shape 3

When planning for the assignment, I decided to create muslin primitive shapes using existing patterns and add complicated shapes using the colored fabric. I drew out my ideas before jumping into the sewing machine (will post photos when I find the sketchbook!) but the sketches and final product ended up looking very different. I did not have a good understanding of the material affordance when I started and thought the fabric will stay rigid when filled. Now that I have completed the project, I have a more concrete understanding of the shapes one can make with fabric. Although my skill set is not spectacular, I also know how to use the sewing machine! This project taught me how to use the sewing machine, explore with different patterns and think in 3-dimensional space while planning, combine different shapes and colored fabrics, and the material affordance of fabric. If I get to work on the project again, I would like to be bold with my fabric choice, pay more attention to craft, and try making more complicated shapes.
