Push/Pull Part 1 – Dayoung Chung

This project was a good way to learn and improve my sewing skill since I don’t have any experience with sewing machine. And I was really excited to experiment with different patterns, textures, and various ways to manipulate them. I struggled with pre-planning in this project, it was hard to plan before actually making the 3 dimensional shape. All of my three objects are interactive and playful. I kept the color scheme to be simple, only with some accent colors.

Three Handled Pumpkin Lamp

With my first object, I started off by making a sphere with leaf shaped pattern. The reason why I chose the leaf shape was because I want the one leaf pattern to have different color. After sewing the sphere, I sketched out different ideas that would add some interaction. I decided to have a handle on the top of the sphere in order to give it a pumpkin lamp look and I added more handles on the sphere after the critique which makes it look more playful and unique.

Rain Drops

For this object, I wanted to make something adorable, small, and interactive to each other. Therefore, I made two small cone shapes which look similar to the kisses chocolate. At first, I planned to attach the sew on snaps on the bottom of the cones so it looks like a diamond when they’re snapped together. However, I put the snaps on the side and they looked like cute rain drops. And I wanted to add some characteristic so I added the buttons as eyes on one of them. After the critique, I used the rock in order to make them stand well.

Water Cube

For the last form, I wanted to experiment with the manipulations Olivia taught us in the class. Especially, I was interested in how to make a hole through the form so I decided to make a cube with a hole that we can put our hands through. In this one, I had to pre-plan in order to make a successful hole in the shape. I began the process by making the hole with blue fabric cylinder then I thought it would look more entertaining if I add some fabrics that covers the surface of the cube. I sewed the two sides with blue fabric and they look like water falling out from the inside. This one was my favorite since it has most fascinating shape and interaction.
