Cuddlebug – Holly Liu
For our final, I immediately jumped to a dancing bird-flower-human creature inspired by Hieronymous Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. Partway through constructing the form, I realized that I didn’t feel protected or a sense of companionship with my creature, so I decided to scrap what I had done so far and start from scratch. I went to my community care project and started working off one of those forms since I felt a more emotional connection to them.
I started with four blobby eight shapes to create this dramatic hourglass figure, and after putting together the pieces and stuffing the form, I went back and added pinches in a diamond pattern to create the wrinkles. For me, the form is ergonomic and has multiple ways to hold and cuddle it. I added the wrinkles since I think that repeated stroking of the texture is soothing to me.
