Assignment 1- Sammie Kim
Reflection
This first small inflatable project was delightful to work with, especially due to the flexibility of the plastic bag material. My love for funky geometrical shapes and bold, vivid colors allowed me to create these five very random and lively inflatables. I tried a variety of methods to create these objects; for instance, I tried cutting random shapes first and then taping various sides like a quilt, and then later I began taping and then cutting out pieces that would fit the shape that I needed to enclose the space. I also realized I can create edges by using tape to accentuate the lines formed. However, there were also unexpected challenges along the way, especially as all these forms were not pre-planned. I would often find small holes and gaps that took some time to find, as well as visualizing the three dimensional form without being able to test them out until the very end. Still, that unpredictability of form was the greatest excitement for me.
- Alien 1
This was the very first inflatable that I created. Due to its largest size, this took the longest time to make proper seals. I utilized the blue tapes to emphasize each shape of the piece, almost like a puzzle.
2. Alien 2
I personally really liked the odd, asymmetrical shape of this inflatable that was different from the rest.
3. Alien 3
This inflatable was the most successful in terms of capturing air. Taping big pieces of plastic together made it easier to add seams that firmly attached.
4. Alien 4
Experimenting with multiple corners of the plastic bag to protrude on diverse sides.
5. Alien 5
Stacking each layer one by one, I somehow ended up with a strange boat shape.
