Push, Pull Part 1
For this project I was interested in creating objects that resembled those that were important to my everyday life. I have recently been following many artists that are working in recreating objects and they have definitely been on my mind. I also had been thinking about the pile of stuffed projects left in the back of the fabrications room, and I wanted to make something that I would want to and easily be able to keep. Most of them were on the larger side, so I decided to keep my objects small and delicate.
My process was a lot of trial and error. I enjoy trying to work through a problem myself, even if it takes a long time. I chose to start with a rather difficult subject, a sewing machine, but I was so excited about doing it, that I might have ignored that it was out of my skill range and allotted time range. This was a good practice in figuring out how to create a pattern for an object and adjusting the shapes we learned how to make. When I started tackling the smaller objects, they came much more easy to me, but I still had difficulty. There were a couple of times when I though about a shape in the wrong way, like not realizing that a certain part of a bottle is a section of a cone. I have a few half made objects, like my cetaphil bottle and nail polish remover, where I couldn’t figure out how to make the shape or fit the patterns together.
I continued to use the muslin or fabric that looked like pattern muslin because I enjoy the simplicity and the sketch- like quality that the usual use of muslin references. I knew I couldn’t make the objects perfect, so I wanted to accentuate the sketchiness and the imperfection of my creations. I used pencil to create details in one of my pieces. I think there might be a more effective way to put the information on the objects, perhaps paint or ink.
My abstract object photographed really well. I think it’s a bit humorous and I enjoy the simplicity of the object and the muslin it is made out of. This was definitely the most spontaneous. I didn’t plan anything out, I just played around with it. I think in real life, it has less impact than the other objects. This one works best in a plain setting, but the others work best in interaction with people.
