Ideas

  • Ode to Pittsburgh
    • Famous historical things/people in Pittsburgh – what do you think of when you think Pittsburgh?
    • Steelers, Pirates
    • Andy Warhol
    • Mr. Rodgers Sweaters
    • Trolley Car Idea of the Duquesne Incline

An Ode to Pittsburgh will focus on sending Pittsburgh Inspired Media across the bridge, invoking the historical colors and symbols Pittsburgh is known for. For example media related to the Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins sports teams will illuminate the bridge in a golden hue. The use of darkness between stripes of illuminated yellow light will pay homage to the iconic sports teams. Other media will consist of Heinz marketing material, Andy Warhol Pop Art images, University Colors of all the major universities in the city, the importance of the steel mill, downtown Pittsburgh city lights, etc. Another thought would be to resemble the trolley cars of the Duquesne and Monongahela Inclines traveling up and down. The overall goal of the 15 minute bridge show is to highlight the importance of Pittsburgh and all its history.

  • Ode to CMU
    • Plaid pattern
    • School colors
    • Buggy going across the bridge – square of light racing across bridge
    • Booth
    • Order of the events at CMU throughout the school year

An Ode to CMU would highlight CMU’s rich history, traditions and symbols. As CMU has many Scottish-inspired traditions/symbols such as the use of the plaid pattern, the bridge would be illuminated in a way that mimics it. Other traditions that could be incorporated into the illumination includes Buggy, which would be conveyed using motion. The Fence and the colors that it has been painted with could be communicated by colors on the bridge. The bridge could also incorporate the various booths that are constructed and painted during Carnival. The different panels could represent multiple booths. A small part of the show could be dedicated to each school & college in CMU.

  • Reality check: Global warming
    • Starts off about beauty of natural world
    • Shows deterioration: A possible chronological timeline of different adverse forces.
    • Could end on a high note – show what the world could be

Reality Check: Global warming would focus on the effects of global warming on the world and how sustainability practices can be used to solve the issues. This show would start with colors representing a healthy world, before the start of global warming (greens, blues etc.) . The next part of the show would focus on the negative impact of global warming, with the temperature rising, increased pollution etc (red, orange, grey etc.). Finally the show would end on a positive note, signifying hope for the future if sustainability practices are followed. Elements of rhythm and tempo of the lighting will be involved while showing the ‘response’ of nature that retaliates.
