Theme: Orpheus and Eurydice

  • Orpheus and Eurydice’s wedding
  • Eurydice’s death
  • Travel to Underworld
  • Conversation with Hades
  • Journey back to the Living World
  • Orpheus looks back at Eurydice
  • Eurydice going back to Underworld
  • Orpheus mourning

It will be a display that will use light to tell the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. We will be able to use light play to display the contrast between the living world and the underworld. There is a lot of motion going on in the story, like poisoning by snake bites, and movements between the living world and the underworld which we hope to express using the motions on the bridge as well as contrasting color palettes. Intense feelings of love, death, mourning and sadness exist, which we hope to express using the colors as well.

Theme: Hero’s Journey

  • Start off at a farmland, lush and amazing spring
  • going through the jungle, various challenges. Sunny bright day
  • Wading through the river (water).
  • Travels through mountains in the winter, (snow weather)
  • Running through the forest (grass and forest) Breezy, full of motion?
  • Fighting the dragon (fire). Intense colors and quick motion
  • Celebration and joy at the end. Like fireworks maybe

This will be a display that follows the story of a young, ordinary farmer’s journey of becoming a hero to save his beloved. We hope to explore lighting choices that illustrate various landscapes, seasons, and times of day. Color choice will be more adventurous to reflect the challenges and joy at the end. There will also be colors that reflect nature as we incorporate scenes of landscapes.

Theme: Transition from Pandemic back to Campus

  • Scenes of pandemic
    • see, wake up Youtube (bridge as loading bar, as video)
    • UI elements (messages popping down, search bar/typing)
    • the bridge is the bar (UI bar)
  • people coming back to campus, transition back to “normal” semester
  • Tempo according to song (Scottish song auld lang syne)
  • use tempo of color change, color choice
    • pastel/mild → more bright colors (plaid colors)
  • themes of Carnival (in-person vs virtual)

In this idea, the display will show a CMU student’s gradual transition from remote semesters back to in-person semesters. We will explore how we can use color transition and tempo change to reflect the vibrancy of the campus and the emotions associated with it. We also plan on using the bridge as a medium to illustrate the computer and use it as a metaphor for various UI features, such as loading bars, notifications, etc that we use in our daily lives. Highlights include the first returning back to campus from the pandemic and carnival. We can use a slower tempo at the beginning to represent a slower pace of life living remotely, lazy and sloth-y, and then increase the tempo of the transitions as we move back to campus.
