biologic “Second Skin” in action

Biologic is a textile actuation project that harnesses the power of hygromorphic material to create a kinetic second skin reactive to the human body.

a microscopic view of the Natto cells responsible for actuation

In detail, the microscopic Natto cells cannot be immediately seen, yet act as the driving force behind the morphing nature of the fabric, and inform the work’s vision of using biology itself as the mechanism for motion.

Making of BioLogic, video detailing the creation process

A wide range of materials with hygromorphic properties have the potential to be evolved into kinetic textile sculptures or installations with natural actuation as a response to their environments.

Moreover, there are many closely related works that use different types of hygromorphic materials ranging from wood to wool to create kinetic motion driving by the environmental stimuli of humidity.
