Due date: sign-up for a date to present.

Three students will present the results of their precedent research in each class. The first three presentations will take place on Tue., Jan 24. Three more students will present each following class until everyone has done so.

Summary

We would like everyone to find and review an existing project related to the course themes. You will write up a short report for the class blog and also deliver a concise five-minute presentation in class. Our intention is that your explorations will start us on the path toward developing new ideas for kinetic textile projects.

Process

Please explore both online and library resources to find another project which can provide insight into the development of a kinetic textile piece. You will be asked to reflect upon the following questions in your posted report:

  • What feature of the work could we specifically evolve into a technique for kinetic sculpture or installation?
  • What details of the artwork or concept are not immediately apparent and how do they inform the work?
  • Are there closely related works?

You may find the Projects and Article Resource List useful for inspiration and sources. However, please look for projects not previously explored and listed, although you may investigate other works by the same artists.

Deliverables

Post a brief report to the course website and be prepared to lead an in-class discussion. Your post should include the following:

  1. one-sentence synopsis of the precedent you are reporting on
  2. one-sentence answers to the prompt questions:
    • What feature of the work could we specifically evolve into a technique for kinetic sculpture or installation?
    • What details of the artwork or concept are not immediately apparent and how do they inform the work?
    • Are there closely related works?
  3. links to additional sources, if online
  4. images or an an embedded video, if available

We will need to keep the in-class discussions brief in the interests of time. Please be prepared to deliver a concise synopsis of the work, show a short selection of images and video, then present one or two questions for discussion. Please keep any presented video to the minimum duration that conveys the concept in order to leave the most time for discussion.

Rubric

The objectives for this assignment are to develop analytic research skills, practice presentation, and develop writing skill. The grading will combine the following categories:

Research: the reported work is substantive, clearly related to the course themes, credibly sourced, and properly cited.

Presentation and Discussion: the in-class presentation concisely identifies the concept and interest of the subject, identifies specific critiques related to course themes, and articulates stimulating questions for the class.

Writing: the written report clearly summarizes the concept of the work, articulates specific lessons related to course themes, and includes carefully selected image and video.
