Frame

I added some functions controlling by random number to this patch in order to make the frequency graph as a motion graph. Also, it triggers the record option automatically in order to make more diversity by using different parts of the piece.

 

Assignment 4 : Auto-Tuner Gone Rogue

For this assignment I started by implementing the vocoder that was shared on the Facebook group. I was excited with the results and wanted to see if I could take the set pitch and set it relative to a pitch coming from my input. This led me to look into auto-tune and a method of implementing this.

Jesse shared with me the tool fzero~ and this helped translate speech into raw frequency. From there I used a trick where I translated to midi and then back again. Since midi values are ints the frequency got rounded down to the nearest midi value (an acceptable pitch), thus mimicking auto-tune effects.

Unfortunately, the fzero~ object can be erratic, and so the robotic voice that results is rather spazmatic and terrifying. I’m looking into how to smooth out this process and avoid the strange pitch spikes that occur, but for now it creates this beautiful glitchy robot voice.

Assignment 4: Some colorful music.

For this assignment, I created a patch which takes in an arbitrary sound file and uses it to convolve a video source. In my case, I used my web cam as the video source. The video is convolved at the color level, with the first bin of the sound fft being the first item in the red matrix, then the second is green, then blue, and then it repeats until there is a 5×5 matrix for each color of the video to be convolved with. The video is rendered at about 14 fps to keep the render from lagging, although this can probably be increased. The scale for the fft can also be increased. Each bin is normalized to cap at 1, but the scale multiplies this by some arbitrary factor. I’ve found that three works best in my dorm.

Assignment 4 – audio visualization discs

I found the mesh distortion technique pretty interesting but I was overall unsatisfied with how… messy it looked. I wanted something a little more coherent so I tried something a little different: distorting several copies of the same object. I chose to use “discs” (really flat cylinders) stacked on top of each other. I scaled them evenly in two directions so they’d stay circular but kept their flatness the same.

I will admit I would have liked to figure out a way to make the discs themselves look nicer but we can just enjoy some Moiré patterns instead 🙂

Assignment 4: Everything Everything

For this assignment I wanted to mess around with more music and how I could change the output of the song. I took the song Distant Past from my favorite band, Everything Everything to use for the project.

First, I took the music video for the song Distant Past, and connected it to two submatrix windows which turned the footage from the music video into the fragmented lines of footage that you see on the patch below:

I then made a multislider which connected to the audio of the song. The multislider showed the movement of the video on the graph, so I used it to change the frequencies by EQ’ing it while both the video and the song played at the same time. I also added another window so you can watch the music video at the same time.

HW4 — randomly scaled frequencies

For this homework, I wanted to explore the possibility of scaling each independent frequency in a pfft instance independently, and I wanted to incorporate camera grabbing– I found our example of using the mean “difference” in camera objects to be an interesting thing to use. To do this, I created a subpatcher that takes in:

-a frequency bin

-a “width” that each randomly generated scale should not deviate from.

-a “random number generator speed” to indicate how often this recalculation should be performed.

As you can see, the “width” can be generated from the jitter objects, in addition to by with a dial. I got these from the Google Drive.

The end result of this patch was quite interesting. Its effect is most audible when humming a single pitch, and hearing it be scaled randomly. When using the patch, you may notice that certain frequencies will randomly be omitted or amplified.

Something I didn’t expect was that there wouldn’t be points where we hear pops because of the difference in scales between two points– I assumed I would need a line~ object. But we learned today in class that pfft accounts for this, so I actually didn’t need to do that.

Audio Visualization Experimentation- Assignment 4

The patch used for this audio visualization system is similar to the one made in class. As documented in the following Youtube video, you can see me experimenting with how different shapes react to a song. Later in the video, I decide to modify the helper patch into using the phases in the fft to modify the shapes. As you can see, it creates interesting patterns. The pattern seemed to be resembling consistent randomness. So I decided to compare it with the patterns that the shape creates with noise amplitudes. Turns out, it gives a similar effect but is more widely spaced(probably something to do with the magnitude of the values). Here is documentation followed by the main patch and helper patch.

Assignment 4 – Babylon Colors

Drawing inspiration from the in-class examples, I created a dual bandpass pfft~ resulting in outputting high, mid, and low frequencies. Then getting the amplitude of from each of those outputs, I altered the amplitude of the red, green, and blue of live captured video. In the patch you can change the crossover frequencies – as I showed in the video recording below. In Presentation View, there are three spectroscope~ objects, and when you change the crossover frequencies, it changes the bounds of the view. The video includes Babylon Sisters by Steely Dan, an  ATSC Recording Sample, and Centipede by Knife Party.

Assignment 3: Convolution

For the impulse recordings, portable recorder was used and then the audio files were modified using audacity by normalizing, amplifying, converting and trimming wherever required. Since I feel that the sound quality changed while I attempted to record my screen, I am also pasting the patch in a compressed form below each screen recording.

My first convolution was with an impulse response created by dropping a stack of heavy books in Hammerschlag Hall on a carpeted floor at late night. The third IR was created by mixing a self produced imitation of the tune from the cup song “You’re Gonna Miss Me” by Lulu and the Lampshades. I slowed down the rate of the beat using audacity and normalized it a bit. I wanted to check out what would happen if one of the easiest beats was mixed with the beatboxing audio file and the result was somewhat weird. I would have called the convoluted signal noise except that if we really observe it, we can find a pattern which makes it seem like one of the machines with gears in the large factories that look somewhat like this:

Assignment 3 – Multiconvolves

For this assignment, I took a portion of Queen’s “Under Pressure” and convolved it with 4 different IR.

Here they are:

  1. Popping a balloon above water, and recording it with a Zoom recorder underwater.
  1. Popping a balloon in the racquetball courts.
  1. The sound of bacon frying.
  1. The sound of horses galloping.

 

I then created a patch where as the song plays, the signal first is by itself, then is convolved with each of the four IR’s, then multiconvolved with 2 IR’s, and finally with all 4 at once.
