I created a file for computerized embroidery. I drew one lotus in Adobe Illustrator. Then I used PEmbroidery to create 4 copies of it. I explored different types of stroke and fills to create 4 different versions of the lotus. I also added text on top. I plan on adding this embroidery onto my jacket.
I also started hand embroidering flowers onto my jacket. I looked at tutorials on how to embroider these different types of flowers. Then I drew on the pattern with an air erasable pen.
Core Concept:
I want to make a more traditional qipao for my final project. In the past, I made a more modernized qipao where the zipper is on the back, the dress is shorter and less tight, and the fabric design is black with colorful butterflies. This time, I want to include more traditional elements. This specific qipao would have a zipper on the side and two slits. It would also be longer and tight-fitted. I also plan to use fabric with designs of birds and flowers. The qipao would also be made to fit me and hopefully be used as a dance costume for a future performance.
Materials:
I have already purchased the fabric I plan to use to make the qipao. I am unsure what the material is called but it is thick and stretchy. For the buttons on the front, I plan to use Chinese qipao buttons that look like butterflies. I will also be using a long black zipper and nude bias tape. I would also need a sewing machine and other sewing-specific materials (like a zipper foot) which I will borrow from Ideate.

Having lived in Chile for most of my life and then moving to Pittsburgh for college, I have always felt a sort of distance and estrangement from Korean culture. My parents have always made huge efforts to teach my brother and me Korean and about Korean culture, traditions, history, etc., but there is still so much that I don’t even know that I don’t know…
Prior to taking this class, I had seen bojagi before but never knew what it was called, what it was used for, its history. But upon learning more about this familiar-looking piece of Korean culture, I became more interested in it. For my final project, I want to explore the craft of making bojagi and make some designs that tie in my bonds and memories with my family together through bojagi.
My preliminary idea for my project is multiple hanging sheets of bojagi. Bojagi reminds me of stained glass windows, so I’m considering taking the idea of how stained glass windows historically have been used for storytelling and implementing it to my bojagi sheets in the form of my memories of and bonds to my family and Korean culture. I’m currently also considering including some embroidery onto the sheets.

Poros are fictional creatures from the popular game League of Legends. They originated from the Freljord, a harsh and frozen land, and propagated to many other areas over time. Poros represent truth, valor, innocence, and love. While they are not playable champions, they cheer players on from the sidelines in Howling Abyss. I wanted to create a poro from scratch because Riot’s official poro plush is both sold out and does not do the actual design justice (see third picture below). Additionally, I would just love to create a fluffy companion from one of my most-played games. This will be a learning experience regarding choosing textured fabrics, measuring and scaling different components, and constructing stuffed toys.

Core Concept
I plan to use captures from earthtime.org, a website created by the CREATE lab at CMU that compiles satellite data and various databases to visualize human impact and demographic shifts geographically. I will compile various images from the website that represent different data about Pittsburgh. To represent these images, I want to create a repeat pattern with a blank map of Pittsburgh with time on the x-axis and different measurements on the y-axis. By not immediately revealing what these graphs represent, I can probe the viewer to consider different aspects of the data (colors shifting and taking over other colors) and then later connect those to the real-life data they represent.

Choice of Materials
As it’s a screenprinting project, the materials are less important than what the visualization represents. I will likely use a cricut machine, tape, and other materials associated with screenprinting. I don’t plan to use very complicated colors, with a base of black maps with different data being represented with relatively easy to differentiate colors (red, blue, green, yellow, other stock colors).

The concept for my final project is to create a custom tote bag and an additional pouch (if I have extra time). I have always been interested in fashion and as a design student there has always been a desire to incorporate my own design into things I use daily. I plan to incorporate different pieces of fabric from clothes I don’t wear anymore and screen printed design on the other side with either hand embroidery or computerized embroidery for some added texture

The process of conceptualizing and making this weaving is we first thought about our concept, which had to deal with nature and technology in the future. And we were leaning towards who prominent climate change will be in the future, and discussing different weather changes such as ocean rising and more wildfires, we were thinking of focusing this as our main topic. Then a team member thought about a plant called ___, which is a plant that can survive very harsh conditions and so were thinking of creating each leaf to represent on type of climate change. One representing ocean, one-surviving the harsh cold weather with good future clothing fabric, and lastly one resembling forest fires. In process of making our weaving, we first thought of using the plant, which had a base, and three leaves. And we thought each team member could each create their own leaf to symbolize the three different representations of nature as well as future of clothing fabric. And thus, after each member finished their pieces we gathered together and pieced together the entire display.
We think what worked well was separating the pieces and each of us our individual creative spirit for the pieces, and we thought it worked well because each of us had so much to add and create with our own hands. We also that the dyed fabric we created the other day worked really well as the base, because it contained symbols of nature including the sun, leaves, fruit, etc..
In the future, we would like to add more leaves to the plant. For now, we made three leaves that each address a specialized function but we would like to add 4~5 leaves that deal with other functions in the future. The plant will have more diversity by having more leaves and would be able to survive better in harsh conditions. Also based on the feedback, we would like to have the plant fit more into the context by making it seem like it is growing out of the ground instead of being potted.
We enjoyed incorporating the sewing techniques we have learned over these past few weeks into this project and hope to continue using them for future projects as well.
Paper ephemera
Core concept
I am interested in paper ephemera and transforming them into objects, which then become less ephemeral and more permanent. For my final project, I want to recreate paper ephemera into a collection of soft sculptures. Referencing my collection of fruit stickers, shipping labels, stamps, etc, I want to embroider a softer version of those things, using thread, fabric, beads, and sequins. This would be an investigation of designs of such items as well. Through this project, I want to learn how to use machine embroidery, so not only do I get to mimic a design but also I can create my own design of non-ephemera soft sculptures.

Over the past week, my roommates and I hosted a Thanksgiving dinner in our apartment. We all invited our friends over and had almost 20 people show up to enjoy our roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pumpkin pie, and much more. The event was especially meaningful to me as it was the first time I’ve hosted and prepared food for any big event with friends, and now I want to find a way to remember the night. To do this, I plan to put together a textile version of our Thanksgiving food plate — a collection of all the foods that we prepared on the day. I hope to have all the foods felted and placed on a large (weaved/felted/folded cloth not sure yet) plate. The foods may even be felted in their natural form (alive turkey instead of roasted turkey) to emphasize the liveliness of the occasion.

The core concept of my final project is creating a dress. I have always wanted to make a piece of clothing, especially a dress. I want to make it unique in the sense that it is a dress that caters to what I want and not the average person. Something that is a bit ruffly on the bottom, and has nice ribbons on certain parts of the dress, and all comes together. Especially important is that the dress is fitted to myself and I am able to wear the dress, so learning how to tailor-make a dress for a certain customer almost.
The choice of materials I use include cotton/linen for the dress so that is it is breathable. I am thinking of using white as ruffle white dresses are really pretty, but yellow could work too. And the usual sewing thread and needle to sew the dress together. For the ribbons, I will use red ribbons as well as laced and a logo ribbon to add more liveliness to the dress.
