Imagining the Future 2070

In the future, efficiency is the name of the game to keep corporations running and preventing social and environmental collapse. Everyone has their responsibilities, tenets and rules written out for them, even their tasks day to day. Some schedules change day to day and some people have their schedule tattooed to their arm.

People live in controlled environments below or above ground. Indoor climate control is perfected such that it is always a comfy “room-temperature”. Indoor clothing becomes fashionable than functional, but also still kind of focused on work function. The semblance of clothing for weather is reserved to those that need to work outside these environments, and they are highly functional.

Individuals and cultures try to preserve an idea of their life outside, either replicating environments underground and indoors, or wearing it on themselves, not unlike the tattoos they wear as mandated by the system. Some see it as a way to rebel against the system or to maintain a sense of individuality.

Imagining the Future – Carol He

When I imagine the future, the movie Blade Runner 2049 immediately comes to mind. In the future, the world has largely been devastated by war, pollution, and natural disasters. Within the ruination there are still pockets of civilization, overcrowded cities housing extremely advanced technology. We will focus on life in the cities, where people are still largely divided by class and economic distinctions. Those in the lower classes must still struggle for survival. Life is harsh and unforgiving. Any clothing worn is for practical purpose, and little thought is given to fashion. On the other hand, the upper class are either focused on developing new technology or maintaining control over different industries. Their clothing maintains a minimalistic style and involves the usage of smart textiles. There also exists the hedonistic, ungrounded upper class population who live in opulence. Their clothing is ostentatious and avant-garde, and they live to bring fashion to new heights. The cities smell of sulfur and metal. There are constant sounds of running vehicles, buzzing electricity, murmuring crowds, and music or advertisements being played. The city aesthetic ranges from overcrowd concrete jungle to neon cyberpunk. People still travel by foot or in vehicles such as cars, but there are also new vehicles. There is significantly more air travel. There are also more technologically advanced versions of skateboards, bikes, and scooters used for travel, such as hybrid hoverboards. Food would become a scarce resource, as farming and organic growth would become impossible at a certain point. Like in the film Snowpiercer, there would be mass production of “protein” for the lower class using questionable ingredients. 3D printing technology would also be used to produce and experiment with food. Humans will ruin themselves through war and pollution, yet make unthinkable leaps in technology, to get from today to 2070.

Imagining the Future

I imagine that in 2070, the Earth will be too toxic and barren: it’s covered in waste with literal mountains of trash and the climate is to hostile for people to live on Earth. People will start deserting Earth and rely on space travel to colonize other habitable planets.

People will develop convenient for everyday wear spacesuits and live mostly in their community spaceships. Technology is a huge part of these societies, and with this technology they develop ways to adapt to extraterrestrial environments: grow and harvest crops, find water sources, build new cities etc.

With this concept I would like to make a quilt of the scene of people leaving the polluted earth in search of another habitable planet, or a scene of a spaceship community.

Encoded Cloth Part 1 – Sophia Huang

I think that in 2070, global warming would have a major impact on our daily lives. Below are things I believe will happen due to global warming:

  1. The moisture in the air and the temperature will cause the icebergs to melt causing sea levels to rise which will then cause extreme hurricanes and tropical storms killing thousands of people and displacing millions of them. Every day thousands of people would be forced to evacuate to higher grounds if they want to live. Because multiple disasters are happening at the same time it will take months for basic food and water supply to reach those in need.

2. The melting of the permafrost will also release microbes that the human species were never exposed to causing even more health issues. As these are happening to those around the coast, other parts of the world would be so dry that there are droughts everywhere. There will not be enough water to water the plants and to feed the animals and food supply would become a life-threatening issue.

3. Climate change will cause mosquitoes and ticks to reproduce faster and to spread even deadlier diseases. There will be mosquitoes even at previously safe parts affecting all of us. The insurance companies will soon declare bankruptcy leaving millions of people without the resources they need to survive and hospitals will be too overwhelmed and soon turn into hotspots for disease transmissions.

4. Mass migration to less hot areas will cause refugee problems and while people are migrating, due to the lack of food and water supply, people will end up stealing or even killing each other to survive. Global trade will slow down since all the trade routes would have been affected by these disasters and diseases. And the countries who originally export their resources will no longer do so as they would want to leave all the supplies for their own citizens. Lastly, these things would cause income equality to worsen as only the rich can afford to wash their hands, eat uncontaminated food, and get basic necessities and medical attention.

I think that the things people would make would be influenced by these 4 major effects of global warming but with a positive spin to it. For example, seeing hurricanes and floods, people would hope for a beautiful/relaxing, and safe ocean. Seeing the mosquitos, people would hope they are beautiful/colorful birds instead. People would also hope to escape Earth and make things that are space-related.

Clothes in 2070 (Smart Textile) Yewon Lee

Encoded Cloth from the Future

In the future, clothes will be concentrated more on the functional part. Clothes made out of smart textiles would be developed with increased functionality. Since smart textiles have numerous potential applications such as transforming into other materials, protecting the wearer from environmental hazards, communicating with other devices, they can be applied to clothing. Using smart textiles, clothes in the future will have functionality and aesthetic features. I believe that clothes would look like superhero suits we have seen in the movies. We would be able to custom functionality such as body suits with air conditioning function, fabric that can change color based on the wearer’s mood, and etc.

Pt. 1 Imagining the Future – Heeyun

1. Intertwined Coexistence of Man-made Structures with Nature

People build around and/or with nature, more so than building over it. For instance, with sea levels having risen significantly due to climate change, more coastal cities build homes, offices, parks, etc. on water. Previously predominantly grey cities incorporate much more greenery into their buildings and streets, like through vertical farming or through decorative means. Also, since so much of our services will have become virtual and gone online –such as malls or shopping malls– the physical spaces that used to provide their respective services are obsolete and abandoned. More of these spaces have been overtaken by nature. Mother nature is reclaiming her space by spreading itself and growing over buildings, statues, public transportation, cars, etc. Unfortunately, we still have a lot of non-recyclable trash (e.g. old computers, car tires, many plastics) that litter our spaces. But there is a sort of “acceptance” of these things that were useful once to let them be as they are now; not everything has to or even can be upcycled/recycled/modified in order to be useful again. Some things just exist and blatantly remain as waste in our environments, but we still don’t stop trying to find beauty hidden within them.

2. Changes in How Consumers Buy & How Companies Sell & Manufacture

For far too long, consumers have been restrained by how companies design, manufacture, and sell their products. Companies for far too long had been designing to sell rather than to last or renew. Legally, companies are required to design with the disposal or a product in mind, design for it to be easily discarded, reused, recycled, or upcycled. The same goes for packaging. This empowers consumers to be able to choose what to do with the products they buy when they have served their useful purpose and need to be disposed of. Consumers are also empowered because more individuals can make their own products, such as furniture, houseware, clothing, etc. at home. Technology on 3D printing, growing plants and other organic, natural materials, and many other kinds of manufacturing methods has significantly progressed such that it has become available to the general public. Consumers now depend less on how big corporations design, sell, and manufacture their products.

3. 3D Printing, AR, and Growing Your Own Clothes

3D printing has already been a growing area in technology, but the most recent development is the commercialization of 3D printers for clothes. People can order clothing designs online rather than the physical garments themselves and make their clothes at home. Several more industries have incorporated 3D printing into their businesses, making this technology commercially available and accessible to a great majority of the population.

Inevitably, more technology has become embedded into our lives, and one way it has been done in fashion is by making use of AR technology. Consumers can try on clothes through AR by looking through a screen how different garments would fit over their bodies without having to try the clothes on physically. This can be done in the comfort of one’s home, rendering physical shops even more obsolete but remain more as “the vintage way of shopping.” In addition to changes in how we shop for clothes, the garments themselves have codes that can be read to show animations and special effects through your phone screen as a way of merging the endless possibilities that the virtual world can provide and that the real world cannot.

However, because of growing concerns of climate change, people have been incorporating more nature into their lives every day in any way possible. As technology improves and further permeates through our lives, growing our own clothes has become an equally large presence in our society. Through biocouture, for instance, people can more easily grow full pieces of clothing or parts of garments.

4. “Nostalgia” for the Past

Regardless of the remarkable progress made in technology thus far, there is still a sort of “nostalgia” for how things used to be several decades, or even centuries, ago. There is a “conflicting” dynamic between a desire to return to how things were in the past versus the fast-paced developing technologies of today (i.e. the future). Fashion shows in virtual reality worlds are juxtaposed with individuals returning to hand sewing, knitting, weaving, etc. their own garments. New clothing lines using the latest, newest, revolutionary, sustainable materials emerge while other smaller businesses sell handmade clothes made from upcycled, nonrenewable materials.

Even our cities feel too new, too current, too modern, so there has been a growing trend where people start living further away from cities towards more rural locations. Since so much of our world is online and virtual, it is easier to stay remote while still being connected and “in the loop” with everything that is happening around the world. The high-stress of living in such fast-paced, densely populated cities has reached a point where people crave how spaces used to in the past: more green and natural, less grey and artificial. As such, living in more rural locations where there is less city noise, artificial lighting, pollution, etc. has become more desirable.

Encoded Cloth Pt 1 – Lukas

  1. The climate crisis has evolved
Visual Portfolio, Posts & Image Gallery for WordPress

New York is flooded and billions of dollars in real estate is now underwater in almost all major countries. Temperatures vary wildly across the globe, with many areas seeing incredibly harsh winters and scorching summers. As a result clothes must be incredibly adaptable to the wearer’s environment, with most clothes having snap-on attachments to layer up or down.

  1. Money has been abolished
Visual Portfolio, Posts & Image Gallery for WordPress

With the collapse of all major nation states, there is now no traditional currency to exchange for goods and services. In lieu, most goods are distributed by need and availability. To symbolically hold a semblance of payment, everybody exchanges shiny rocks and trinkets that they’ve found in the rubble.

  1. New textiles can’t be produced
Visual Portfolio, Posts & Image Gallery for WordPress

With most aquifers drained, water is a precious commodity. Crop blights and diseases have spread among almost all natural fibers, and most people turn to discarded material to incorporate in their clothes.

  1. New community traditions have emerged
Visual Portfolio, Posts & Image Gallery for WordPress

Without nation states to pledge citizenship to, micro-communities have formed locally. Small neighborhoods and blocks band together and family structure is no more. Now much freer in movement and mind, information is exchanged at an alarming rate. To symbolize a connection between these groups, people cut off parts of their clothing and sew them onto the clothes of a close friend. Your fashion results from your relationships in a physical sense, and you can be identified by your appearance immediately.

Encoded Cloth Part 1 – Susan

To me, the future 2070 will look very technology-oriented. I imagine there be flying cars, roads with cars that lift above it. Transportation to different planets, a warming Earth and thus very innovative ways to combat global warming (such as different types of clothing and possibly even a head shielf). I imagine 2070 to not have a lot of wild life in terms of animals or plants, and every resource will be very bare (such as coral reefs). I know this isn’t the best image, but I do see tons of imbalance on Earth such as more wild fires, diseases, and wars as the years try to meddle and settle together. The direction of what I might like to do is something that combines future technology (like flying cars, or teleportation and space shuttles), and also chaos with wild fires and over-population (ie. not enough resources) with tons of capitalism with the rich getting richer and poor getting poorer.

  1. More virtual reality

An online presence will be more valued than the real one in the future. People will care more about what their virtual persona looks like. Digital fashion will be well established and major fashion brands will work on digital fashion first and then try and translate that into real clothes.

Visual Portfolio, Posts & Image Gallery for WordPress

  1. Change in clothing production.

The clothing and textile production will be too much of an issue on global carbon emmission, I predict that the world will stop the production of textile entriely and only use existing materials. Technology to recylcle materials will develop even more and every new clothes will be made with existing fabric and fiber. Also, the manufacturing system will be forced to change so that clothing is made after the weared decides on the exact color, design, and size through digital app. Personal 3D printer that we could use to download clothes and print our own clothes will be distributed. This way, every clothing is unique to the wearer and no waste is created while production.

  1. Change in the way of communication

We will move away from text-based communication to sound and visual based. Virtual communication will be the norm. Also, we will be able to to send touch, smell, and taste without written or spoken language.

  1. Due to virtual reality being the norm, people will long for real experience.

Especially tactile experience will be valued highly. Like ASMR, there will be entertainment invloving tactile senses and people will monetize it. Human to human interaction without any digital element and audience involved will also be valued highly.

Encoded Cloth Part 1 – Aaron

In the world of 2070, I imagine people to live vastly different lives due to advances in technology and the increasing relevance of climate change. Here are five of the most important areas where I imagine will influence us the most in 2070.

Artificial Intelligence

As artificial intelligence and machine learning begin playing more important roles in carrying out tasks, the need for human labor will substantially decrease. This will lead to a massive displacement of non-specialized workers and will likely cause large-scale political backlash. On the other hand, AI will also play an indispensable role in assisting specialized workers in tasks that require human supervision (surgery, aviation, etc.). This can lead to safer operations and more efficient transportation, which can benefit all of humanity.

Visual Portfolio, Posts & Image Gallery for WordPress

Climate Change

As coastal cities experience more climate extremes such as floods and hurricanes, governments will no longer be able to ignore the issues of climate change. This will likely lead to tougher but necessary environmental policies, hurting businesses in the short run while buying time for the world to transition to a greener economy. In 2070, we will likely see some populations fleeing inland to escape floods and food prices skyrocket due to their destruction via extreme climate events.

Visual Portfolio, Posts & Image Gallery for WordPress

Proximity of Technology

In 2070, we will also likely see our technology blend further within our lives. We currently interact with technology that exists outside our bodies (ex. smartphones, tablets, etc.), but 2070 will likely bring about technologies embedded within our bodies. Nanobots can continuously circle within our stomach to check for diseases, chips can be inserted within our brains so we can connect our minds to the world, and wearable will be a thing of the past. This integration of technology will likely increase the ease of communication and create a new class of human interaction.

Visual Portfolio, Posts & Image Gallery for WordPress

Space Travel

As rocket technology advances, costs will significantly and space travel will become a popular form of travel for the middle-upper to upper class. Space elevators, hotels, and global trips will become the norm (and flat-earthers will be gone). Attempts at the colonization of Mars will begin as private space companies continuously send teams to the planet. The world will watch in awe as they realize the potential of humanity, but also realize the new problems of space ownership. Who owns Mars? What will space regulations look like?

Greener Diets

As the world comes to grips with the realities of farming animals, it will become increasingly difficult to justify the continual production of meat in both the developed and developing world. As a result, 2070 will see humans having very different diets, consisting of many plant-based alternatives. Protein will likely be obtained either artificially or through other means such as bugs. This will be a slow process but is bound to happen as the world can no longer manage the pollution that the meat industry produces.
