Person In Time Proposal

For this project, I would like to use myself as the subject and create a continuation of the previous work from the typology assignment.

I want to capture motion in a vogue performance. Like some examples shown in class, I will use a high-speed camera to capture 2-3 minutes of vogue performance. The intended output is to have moving or still images that capture the progression of motion over time.

I want to explore more geometric forms that a person can play with. Following the logic of Oskar Schlemmer’s study of the living sculpture, I want to let the same person wear different geometric shapes on their body and then record their body’s movement and geometric shapes.

(I have a friend doing contemporary dance, so I want to record their improvising on the same piece of music for this study.)

geometric shapes can come from Kandinsky:

Inspiration:

As AI-generated art become more accessible (e.g. Dall E), I started to wonder what it means to create. If we use algorithm to generate an image, who is the ‘creator’ of the work? Would it be the AI or the developer or the user? Or could it be counted as collaboration across all three? Does who matter more than what? I wanted to shift the focus on the output/work instead of the author by making a space where anyone can easily create something beautiful and let their work be part of the many.

Since oftentimes creations are made with hands, I want to capture the movements of hands and the act of creation & presentation of the creation. Motion of opening hands gives the sense of carefully presenting something small and important, so I’m thinking to use leapmotion to detect the motion of slowly opening palms to reveal what’s inside.

Upon opening one’s palm, a butterfly of randomly selected shape and color would come alive and start flipping its wings on the user’s palm, then fly towards the front to join the crowd of butterflies.

“The ancient Greek word for “butterfly” is akin to psyche: soul or mind.” Creation starts with one’s idea, and I thought the motion of creating and releasing and idea would be best portrayed with animating a butterfly that later joins the crowd of butterflies presented in front of the user. The collection of glowing colorful butterflies would represent how we can easily appreciate works by others regardless of the author, as well as contribute to it by doing a simple motion of opening palms.

My goal is to explore light painting through photogrammetry. I want to capture another typology of drawings by giving participants a series of prompts. My apparatus will have a phone and light source mounted at a fixed distance while simultaneously capturing 360 video in order to incorporate HDRI lighting into the final composite.

Hunan-PeronInTimeProposal

I know what I want to try and experiment with in this project but I don’t have a very concrete concept or a particular idea yet. I do have a few thoughts.

What I want to try: cinematic slow motion video capture of people. I want to explore the possibility of making cinematic shots of people using ultra slo-mo cameras (going beyond what’s usually seen in movies.)

Thoughts/potential ideas:

  1. Capturing people’s expressions and actions when they are hanging out with friends. When people place themselves in a social environment, a lot is going on very fast with their micro expressions and minute actions, which are usually overlooked by other participants of the same social interaction. By recording the interaction with a high-speed camera (~700fps,) I want to capture these moments and present them in a short film that encapsulates an encounter in a different way (as opposed to capturing the content of their conversation, which is the usual view.) Also entertaining the possibility of using the robot arm to introduce fast (but normal speed when viewed in slow motion) camera movements, but the distraction of a gigantic robot arm swinging at 2m/s just a few feet away needs to be considered carefully.
  2. Heartbeat city: capturing the AC flickering of city lights reduced to heart rate as people passes by. This should be around 1300fps (24fps * 60hz * 60 /  70bpm) although I could do slower. At this fps, people are barely moving. So the usually static city will have more actions then the usually dynamic human, flipping the common perception of the mobile vs the static.

Person in Time Proposal

My ambidexterity is one of the traits that define me and help me understand myself. The idea for this project is to focus and record the movement of my hands throughout time performing different tasks and reacting to different situations, in the hope that it would represent me as a person, a woman, a friend, a child, a scientist, a coder, an artist, a musician, etc. The hands themselves are embedded with my personality.

I am debating how to make the footage appear more intuitive and more “experimental”. My initial thought is inspired by the “MJ white glove” piece, where I can center my hands throughout the video. I am also thinking of doing something interesting with hand motion capture.

Person-in-Time project proposal

For my Person-in-Time, I’m currently debating between two ideas, both taking the form of video:

1. As part of my existing long-term project, capturing another perhaps hopeless attempt: my trying to use high-definition sound recording in the hope to trigger Dudu’s libido. My plan is to go film at rabbits breeders’ shows and find a person that will agree to let me come record their rabbits while mating. I will then create a casting of my legs, find a way to keep those warm from within (perhaps by using an electronic blanket) and have the sound playback to Dudu with the goal of arousing him. The process will be documented and presented in video. My original idea was to specifically focus on ultrasonic sounds, since rabbits can hear on average, between 96Hz-49,000Hz, but obtaining an ultrasonic playback will be a complex and expensive endeavor, and perhaps should be a later step to this chapter.

2. Setting a specific setting for filming – static camera, same shot, controlled background, and lightning (should maybe look like an audition setting?). I will then invite students-actors from the drama department, one at a time, to read a short text. Each encounter will start with me asking the participating actor one fixed question (like “what is acting/playing?”), and then ask them to play the answer the previous actor gave (all of them except the first participant), thus creating a sort of reflexive chain of text. The way I imagine it, I will then have footage containing repetitive texts, some are authentic and some performed, and I’m curious if I’ll find an interesting tension and/or illusion to play with when editing.

shrugbread-Person in Shadow

My idea for Person in Time project I plan on creating a silhouette copy that only records your shadow when you’re producing a noise.

I have really been inspired lately by KN on YouTube. The video ‘ghosty’ is my favorite and the biggest inspiration for this project.

Touchdesigner has multiple ways of doing audioreactive visuals, so my main idea right now is to project the azure kinect’s particle cloud and have the scale of the point cloud controlled by a microphone waveform. This idea is very subject to change or be redone entirely. I am very open to adding other elements that help the conceptual lenses I am using in this piece.

Proposal — Waorb

— W A O R B — warm orb

What is the waorb? I’m so glad you asked!

The waorb is an arduino compatible microcontroller connected to two resistive temperature sensor circuits and two little heaters attached with thermal silicone to the inside a copper shell.

That nice… What will it do?

It will become waorb.

What does that mean?

The waorb will have two modes. Listening and repeating. During the listening mode the woarb will be held firmly in both hands, after a delay/once it senses a stable temperature circa body temp it will record this temperature. In repeat mode the Waorb can be touched with by the tips of your fingers (or your whole hand but that’ll make it weird) and will repeat back all of the body temperatures it’s experienced. Because I want the waorb to be simple it will just use its shell’s ability to dissipate heat to move between tempratures. This is why it will be best to only touch the waorb with a few fingers while it is repeating.

How will I make the Waorb and how will I learn the necessary Waorb making skills?

I asked the electrical engineer I live with to explain the basic information I would need to complete the Waorb. Over the past couple days they taught me about basic circuit components and taught me about possible options I could pursue for this project. I designed the above circuit with their help and they showed me a program https://www.falstad.com/circuit/circuitjs.html that I can use to make sure the components I’ll purchase from digikey will work together.

I have experience in jewelry making which I believe will make the outside construction of the waorb possible. As well as limited experience with soldering/putting together electronics. While I have not programmed an Arduino, I do think that my other programming experience and the abundance of Arduino tutorials (as well as the simplicity of the program) will make waorb a possible project.
